The USS John F. Kennedy aircraft carrier, commissioned on September 7, 1968 enters service and was
immediately deployed to the Middle East where it served most of it's naval life.
In the first 25 years of service, over 250,000 aircraft landed on the ship's flight deck and in the 90's the
ship's air wing set the record for bombing accuracy during the first Gulf War.
The Mediterranean Sea, Jul. 31, 2002 — Elements from Carrier Air Wing Seven fly over USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67). In the formation are four
F-14 Tomcats, flanked by two F/A-18 Hornets and an EA-6B Prowler outboard on each side and trailed by two S-3B Vikings and an E-2C Hawkeye.
A carrier's air wing often will perform a small air show for the crew of the ship as they return home from a deployment.
John F. Kennedy and her embarked Carrier Air Wing Seven (CVW-7) were completing a regularly scheduled deployment in support of
Operation Enduring Freedom, and turned over duties in the Arabian Gulf region to USS George Washington (CVN-73)
and CVW-17 on July 19. U.S.

When the Six-Day-War occurred between Israel and the United Arab Repulic (1968), "Big John" was deployed
to the Mediterranean marking the ship's maiden voyage. And during the 1970's the ship would return to the
Mediterranean seven (7) more times.
In 1981 the ship was deployed to the Indian Ocean making a trip through the Suez Canal. Within this decade
the ship was visited by the ruler of Somalia, making it the first time a Somali leader had ever stepped foot on
an American aircraft carrier.
In 1983 the ship returns to the Mediterranean due to the crisis in Beirut.
July 1986 marked the 100th anniversary and rededication of the Statue of Liberty in New York, and during
the International Naval Review, the USS John F. Kennedy led the international naval armada.
The ship is then deployed back to the Mediterranean between August 1986 and March 1987 and back there
again in August of 1988 and October of 1997.
On January 4, 1989 two Libyan MIG 23's were shot down by F-14 Tomcats from the USS John F. Kennedy.
In August of 1990 when the first Gulf crisis began, the ship was deployed with just four (4) days notice, to the
Persian Gulf. In September of that same year, the carrier became the flagship of the Red Sea Battle Force.
Carrier Air Wing 3 attacked Iraqi forces as part of Operation Desert Storm, flying 11,263 combat hours, and
delivering over 3.5 million pounds of ordnance in this conflict that began in January of 1991. The ship launched
114 strikes and nearly 2,900 sorties. After the cease-fire in Iraq, the ship passed through the Suez Canal once
again heading home to a warm welcome in March of '91 in Norfolk, Virginia. Some say it was the greatest
celebration since World War II.
In the 6 months between the fall of 1992 and spring of 1993, "Big John" spent time in the Adriatic Sea in
response to the turmoil brewing in Bosnia.
Also, in 1998 the vessel participated in Operation Southern Watch which involved the enforcement of the
"no-fly zone" over Iraq. During this mission, some 10,300 aircraft were safely landed aboard her flight deck.
During Hurricane Floyd in Sep 1999, the USS John F. Kennedy rescued a floundering tugboat, the Gulf Majesty.
After "9/11" (11 Sep 2001) attacks on NYC and the Pentagon, the War on Terror in Afghanisan begins and the
ship takes part in Operation Iraqi Freedom - another attack on Baghdad.
In February of 2002 the ship is deployed to the North Arabian Sea to support Operation Enduring Freedom.
In 1974 the USS John F. Kennedy was upgraded to handle the F-14 Tomcat and the S-3 Viking. This would be
the first of many major overhauls or DSRA (Dry-docking Selected Restricted Availability).
In 1984 the ship is dry-docked for repairs (DSRA) and another overhaul.
After the first Gulf War in 1991, the ship gets some major repairs to its engineering & flight-deck systems and
equipment. The ship is then upgraded to handle F/A-18 Hornet aircraft which will replace the A-7E Corsair IIs.
A two-year comprehensive overhaul (COH) is conducted on the vessel after the Bosnian conflict in 1993.
The ship gets a well-deserved face-lift beginning in January of 2003 after returning from the Arabian Sea.
